Hitch Equipment: Are You Storing It Correctly?

January 24, 2025 — by Jack Enfield

Weight distribution hitches (WDHs) play a crucial role in ensuring a smooth and safe towing experience for your travel trailer. They help evenly distribute the weight of your load, preventing excessive sway and improving control. But once you’ve arrived at the campground and disconnected your trailer, storing your weight distribution hitch can present some challenges. Here are the best ways to store your weight distribution hitch when not in use:

Step 1: Disengage

First and foremost, always disengage your weight distribution hitch when you arrive at the campground. This involves:

Unhooking the sway bar: Detach the spring bars from the hitch and remove any tension from the system.

Removing the ball mount from the tow vehicle: After detaching the spring bars, remove the entire ball mount from your vehicle’s receiver. This helps avoid the shin banging that invariably happens when a ball mount is left in a hitch receiver.

Once the hitch is disengaged, many trailer owners just leave it on the ground near their trailer. However, that method has a few drawbacks:

• The parts can get dirty or wet and begin to rust, compromising its condition.

• The parts end up getting in the way or become a tripping hazard.

• The risk of theft by leaving the product out in the open.

Should you decide to leave your hitch on the ground, covering it with a tarp may be helpful to conceal the product from the view of others and help keep moisture away.

Step 2: Store Your Products

There are several options when it comes to storing a weight distribution hitch at the campground:

Hitch storage bag: A durable, weather-resistant bag can be used to store the hitch. These bags often come with a drawstring or zipper closure to keep dirt, rust, and moisture away from the hitch components. Look for bags specifically designed to fit your weight distribution hitch.

Hitch storage box: A lockable storage box, often made of heavy-duty plastic or metal. Not only does it protect your hitch from the elements, but it also prevents theft. Choose a box that’s large enough to fit the hitch and accessories such as sway bars and pins.

Your baggage compartment: Some campers store the weight distribution hitch directly in their storage compartment. While it keeps the hitch equipment off the ground, it may not be the best option if you’re looking to conserve space.

Your truck bed: While safer than leaving your equipment on the ground, it’s not ideal.
