The Best Trips Start Before You Leave

After months off the road, it’s tempting to hook up and go.

But experienced RVers know that your first trip of the season shouldn’t be your test run.

A quick walkaround isn’t enough. The things that cause the most problems on the road are often the ones you don’t see right away.

Before you head out, take a little time to inspect what actually matters.

START WITH THE BASICS

•  Check pressure (including the spare)

•  Look for cracking, uneven wear, or dry rot

•  Don’t forget: tires age out before they wear out

Tires can look fine but still be unsafe after sitting all winter.

• Inspect brake pads (replace if less than 1/8″)

•  Ensure all wires to the backing plate are connected (for electric brakes)

•  Test responsiveness before hitting the highway

•  Listen for grinding or delay

Brake performance can feel “off” before it fully fails — don’t ignore it.

•  Inspect:
      – Spring hangers
      – Shackle links
      – Frame
      – Leaf springs and clips

•  Torque nuts and wheel lug nuts

•  Look for cracking, bending, or loose components

If your RV felt rough, bouncy, or hard to control last year… that’s not something that fixes itself.

THE OVER LOOKED AREAS

Entry Steps & Stability

•  Are your steps solid and secure?

•  Any flex, shifting, or uneven contact?

You use them every single day — don’t wait for a close call.

Connections & Hitch Setup

•  Inspect hitch, pin box, and safety chains

•  Lubricate your truck hitch and pin box (for 5th wheels)

•  Check for wear, looseness, or unusual movement

Small amounts of play can turn into major towing issues over time.

Seals, Doors & Storage

•  Check for water intrusion or cracked seals

•  Ensure compartments close and latch properly

Water damage doesn’t start big. it starts small and unnoticed.

Lights & Awnings

•  Ensure all running lights and tail lights are working

•  Test awnings for smooth operation and clean if needed

These are often overlooked until you’re already at the campsite or worse, on the road.

A Simple Rule to Travel By

If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.

RV travel should feel controlled, comfortable, and predictable. If it doesn’t, your RV is trying to tell you something.

At MORryde, we spend a lot of time talking  with RV owners after issues show up.

Our advice? Catch them early.

A little attention now can mean the difference between a smooth trip… and one you don’t enjoy nearly as much as you should.
